At the time, she was hired as an intern in An American Place restaurant for one year. However, Guarnaschelli's cooking experience began before her time, as she watched her mother test numerous recipes at home, while she edited cookbooks. She worked under Larry Forgione and then at various restaurants in New York France and Los Angeles including Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Guarnaschelli was eventually the executive cook at Butter. Guarnaschelli was a contestant on Food Network's Iron Chef America in 2007. The contestant was Cat Cora at the Farmers Market Battle of 2007 and won. Then she appeared as one of the judges on the show and was a contestant in The Next Iron Chef season four, where she finished third-place finisher. Also, she took part on Food Network's Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast and lost. After the fourth season, she became Geoffrey Zakarian's sous-chef. She became host of The Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008, and she teaches a small group of students in how to prepare classic meals.
